John Brock, Controller | FP&A Manager
There’s a version of J2 Resources that only John Brock gets to see—the one that lives in the financials. Every order shipped, every supplier paid, every quarter of growth the company has put together since 2021 runs through his desk in one form or another. For John, that’s not a burden. It’s the best part of the job.
From Big Firms to a Better Fit
John grew up in Richmond, Texas, studied at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, and went straight into public accounting after graduation. He spent four years as an auditor, then moved into consulting work.
What pulled him from that path was a conversation with John Brunetti, Co-Founder of J2 Resources. When he mentioned that J2 was growing and needed someone to run the books, the timing landed right.
“It was a young company, a growing company, somewhere I felt I could truly play a big part and leave a footprint. Coming from EY and Siegfried, there was a lot of learning involved, but here I could take that knowledge and have an impact on the way things operate.”
He joined as Controller in December 2021, when J2 was about five years old.
The Work Behind the Growth
The Controller title at J2 covers more ground than it might elsewhere. John manages the financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, accounts payable and receivable, and is also heavily involved in operations and process improvements. Over the last few years, he’s led significant enhancements to the systems that support all of it.
“Everything boils down to the numbers. The better you can present those numbers and tell your story through the face of the financials, that’s something I’ve always been intrigued with.”
At a company growing as fast as J2, that story keeps getting more interesting to tell. The challenge is making sure the infrastructure keeps pace with better reporting tools, tighter forecasting, and cleaner data. John describes it as a heavy lift—but a fun one! The fast-paced environment that J2 operates in, he says, keeps things from getting stale.

Small Company, Big Numbers
Ask John what he enjoys most about working at J2, and he lands on something that sounds like a company tagline but clearly isn’t just one.
“It’s a small company with a global reach. We’re doing things that major corporations do, yet we have that personal touch. Each customer is cared for almost individually, as if they’re our sole focus.”
He sees that ethos showing up across the whole organization—not just in sales, but in operations, in the warehouse, in accounting. The focus is on making things easy for the customer, streamlining processes, and getting things right.

Outside (and Inside) the Office
We can’t introduce you to John without also introducing you to Tucker, his ten year old German Shepherd. Outside of work, he keeps John on his toes—opening door handles, escaping his home, and roaming the halls until John gets back. So, when John needed a place to keep him during long work days, Tucker came to the office. The office never looked back!
Team members even have desks stocked with dog treats and extra snacks just for him. Tucker is, by most accounts, a full member of the team—just one with considerably less involvement in the month-end close.
When John’s not at his desk, he’s enjoying time on a golf course or at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Before he was officially hired, he actually played in a vendor golf tournament with Joe Dugan and John Brunetti where he helped the J2 team finish second and take home a few prizes—and his job offer followed shortly after. Out at the rodeo, he currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Junior Commercial Steer committee and as a Committeeman on the Lamb and Goat Auction committee.
It’s a side of John that doesn’t show up in the month-end reports. But it says something about the kind of person J2 keeps around: someone with roots, with loyalty, and with a long view of what showing up consistently actually means.
