We were approached by a large mechanical contractor that specializes in field construction and shop fabrication. In this case, they were working on a crude storage facility project for a large midstream company. For this facility in particular, our customer needed large-diameter products geared towards specific applications that met the end user’s approved manufacturer list.
Our customer needed thousands of large-diameter line items fulfilled to several locations in a short amount of time. On top of that, their midstream company had an approved manufacturer list for the parts the project required. For a project of this scope, it’s common that contractors assume they’ll need to coordinate with multiple distributors to get everything they need; this presents significant additional costs, both line-item and overhead and administrative expenses.
We checked the box on each of the customer’s needs. Traditional distributors often stop at 12, maybe 16-inch pipes; for J2, providing 24-36 inch pipes was no problem. Plus, our inventory matched almost perfectly with the approved manufacturer list and the end-user’s specific quality criteria. Because our inventory is geared for this exact type of large buy, we could price it competitively as well.
The bottom line: J2 Resources had the parts the customer needed, meaning we weren’t at the mercy of the market. Our inventory gives us a unique ability to perform well and perform quickly. By reverse engineering the supply chain and optimizing the timeframe, we made the job that much easier for the contractor and provided top-notch quality and customer service for the end-user.
In this scenario, J2’s inventory and availability made the difference. Within 24 hours of receiving the very detailed order, we had product at the job site(s) and the fabricator; additionally, we then staged and released product(s) per their schedule throughout the lifecycle of the project. In total, it took about four weeks to complete.
This customer has stayed with J2, and we’ve got four more upcoming projects just like the one described above. We’ve set a precedent for our own capabilities; our customers always know what they’re going to get.
